Year 9 Games Development

This year our Year 9's budding game designers have developed some exciting electronic games. Looking at the work submitted shows the passion, patience, creativity and innovation of our students, all off whom devoted long hours to craft and perfect their games.

The type of game developed by our young programmers is a genre known as platform games (or platformers). By definition a platform game ' is a video game in which the game-play revolves heavily around players running and jumping onto platforms, floors, ledges, stairs or other objects depicted on a single or scrolling game screen.'

The game engine used was Game Maker Lite from YoYo Games. Game Maker is free to download although one can purchase its pro version for additional functionality. Although Game Maker is available in both Windows and Mac Operating systems, the games published here are compiled for Mac OSX only.

The 2D images used in these games are known as sprites. Some students drew their own sprites, while others used sprite sheets from the Internet. Similarly some students have incorporated audio in their games.

The electronic gaming industry has grown exponentially in recent years. With continued passion, creativity, imagination, perseverance and the relevant qualifications, some of our young game creators may just turn their hobby into a career. One never knows where their school-based endeavours might take them in future!
